If you’ve ever left the Cloisters still thinking about the meals, you’re not alone. We often hear that meals at The Cloisters on the Platte are delicious and appreciated, and at the heart of it all is Chef Manager, Kevin Carney.
Kevin’s culinary journey began early in life, sparked by cooking at home and with the Scouts of America. His passion for both food and service comes naturally – fueled by a generous spirit and love of bringing people together. Born in Missouri, Kevin moved to Omaha in junior high, graduated from Roncalli Catholic High School, and later completed the culinary program at Metropolitan Community College. For eight years, he trained under Chef Brook Dill, who first invited him to The Cloisters on the Platte.
“I began my time here in 2018. Since then, I have played a pivotal role in the food service operation and menus that so many retreatants have enjoyed. I have been in my current role as Chef Manager for the Cloisters since the fall of 2021,” Kevin shared.
Before joining the Cloisters, Kevin worked in many fast casual settings, including Villagio Pizzeria, Hilton Hotel, and Happy Hollow Country Club. But it’s his time at The Cloisters on the Platte that Kevin’s describes as “priceless.”
“Over my time here, there have been many talented bakers, cooks, and aspiring culinarians who have helped us in our mission to provide food that is rustic, humble, and approachable. We have all greatly appreciated your willingness, as diners, with our ‘mystery’ seasonal menu plan. The freedoms and opportunities this gives the Cloisters kitchen staff are very unique within our industry. My experience in our kitchen has been priceless, and my growth as a chef has been tremendous. Thank you for choosing to spend your time at the Cloisters. I hope to continue to serve you meals that nourish a fruitful spiritual experience.”
Outside the kitchen, Kevin enjoys traveling with his girlfriend, Victoria, and catching concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. He is the third of eight siblings, with most of his family still in the Omaha or Kansas City area.
